Ocean Odyssey Team Sign Up

To try out Junior FIRST LEGO League, here's a chance to be involved in Ocean Odyssey for the summer. You can be involved at whatever level works for you and your family.

Steps
  • Sign up a team on this form (you don't need to know who is on the team at this point)
  • After we get payment, we'll send you information to sign up to a yahoo group so you get access to people sharing resources.
    • $40 made out to Wake Robotics and sent to:
      Wake Robotics
      203 Copper Hill Drive
      Cary,NC 27518
    • Or contact Linda@wakerobotics.org to get PayPal information

  • Each week on Wednesday, we'll post a set of suggestions for a 2-hour get together for Ocean Odyssey JrFLL.

Cost:
  • $40 paid per team to Wake Robotics (access to a framework of suggested activities for 10 weeks, a JrFLL Ocean Odyssey e-community for sharing resources, and participation in a JrFLL Ocean Odyssey Open House on August 25th)
  • A 15x15 inch X-Large base plate (also available at Learning Express and sometimes Toys R Us)
  • A display board

Optional costs
For simple machines, we're using this kit from LEGO Education:
http://www.legoeducation.us/eng/product/simple_machines_set/2297
Note: It does not have a huge number of LEGO's in it (as in, "I paid what for only this amount of LEGOs?!"). The benefit is that it has the right selection of gears, axles, etc. to do a great job of showing a wide variety of simple machines.

Timing:
Find 3 to 6 kids who are interested in getting together on a regular basis during the summer.

For those who want to be involved but at the absolute minimum level timewise:
Do this with just your family. Talk about oceans and marine life during the summer when you go to the beach or the aquarium or even just when you get books out of the library.
  • Prior to the August 25th Expo, have your kids build a LEGO model on a 15x15 inch base plate (directions here), create a LEGO vehicle and put some pictures of your beach trip on a display board.
  • Come to the JrFLL Ocean Odyssey Open House on Saturday, August 25th

Here's a sample base plate everyone will bring on August 25th -- get a large base plate, put on the middle divider, create an ocean scene of your choice (helpful to know if it's coastal, open ocean, coral reef or deep trenches so we can put them together in the right order), then create some vehicle (motorized or not) that can drive along the base plates and see all the scenes...
